Jacket Gate at the Ice Vault

Jacket Gate! Trouble at a NJ Hockey Rink!

Four hockey moms ordered matching letterman jackets to cheer on their 10U Jersey Hitmen. Their kids got suspended for it.

If you've spent any time in a cold rink lobby, you know the type: the parents who show up early, run the 50/50, and somehow always have hand warmers to spare. These moms wanted to look the part in the stands. Instead, they set off one of the strangest youth hockey disputes of the fall, and it played out at a rink plenty of Northeast hockey families know well: Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, New Jersey.

What happened

The jackets went public on September 20, and the kids were sidelined soon after.

Parents on the Jersey Hitmen 10U team had custom letterman jackets made with the Hitmen name on them, to wear to games.

Four of the moms posed in the jackets for an Instagram photo posted September 20. The post was later taken down.

Club owner Bobby Reiss emailed families that the players were suspended from practices and games until the organization received restitution, including a 15% royalty. The total dollar amount hasn't been reported.

The story went viral in early October after posts from Clanko Media and Darren Rovell.

As of this writing, there's no public word on whether the dispute has been settled or the kids are back on the ice.

Fair point, wrong target?

The club has a real trademark to protect. The Hitmen of New Jersey, LLC has held federal registrations on the JERSEY HITMEN name since 2014, and they specifically cover jackets (USPTO record). Trademark owners are generally expected to police their marks, and the club says its player contracts spell out the apparel rules.

Youth hockey runs on parents who show up. They drive before dawn, sit in freezing bleachers and pay for ice, gear and travel fees that add up fast. When an organization treats that enthusiasm as a licensing problem, families notice, and so does the rest of the hockey world.
